Kelly’s World

In 2019, Kelly Vallerie won the prestigious Asia NewGen Fashion Award.

This competition was initiated by Harper’s Bazaar Southeast Asia, with the goal to find and support up-and-coming designers.

As part of this award, Kelly received a scholarship to continue her studies at the famed Instituto Marangoni in London.

Two weeks before she flew to the UK, we had the chance to film and interview her at her studio and found out more about her approach to design as well as her complex, multi-function and experimental collections: ‘Ludus’ and ‘Freaks’.

This is her story.

The film starts with Kelly in her studio, introducing herself and her design philosophy. Around the studio, we see some of her sketches and inspirations for her designs.

Natural lighting is used throughout the film to match the muted and understated colors used in her collections.

For the shots, I chose 4:3 for the aspect ratio as it suitable for most of the shots in the film. It also lends itself well to having two 3:2 lookbook photographs side by side (as seen below) without having to extend the background. These photographs were taken from her lookbook of her collection ‘Ludus’.

We get to see her try out some of her multi-function designs from both her collections ‘Ludus’ and ‘Freaks’.

Now, aside from running her eponymous label KELLY VALLERIE where she gets to experiment and continue to push boundaries, she also runs a fashion and technical studio called CREATE A CREATIVE, where she gets to share her knowledge and experience to help fashion labels craft their collections.
